What is OCPI?

Open Charge Point Interface

OCPI is the open protocol for EV roaming: it lets a CPO and an eMSP exchange charger locations, live availability, tariffs, sessions and billing records, so drivers can charge on networks they have no contract with. OCPI 2.2.1 is the current widely used version.

OCPP connects chargers to their own operator’s system; OCPI connects one operator’s system to another’s. An OCPI connection is set up per partner, peer to peer, or once through a roaming hub that many CPOs and eMSPs connect to.

OCPI carries locations and live charger status, tariffs, sessions, charge detail records (CDRs) for billing, and authorisation tokens, so an eMSP can show a partner’s chargers in its app and start sessions on them.

Iris Network roams over OCPI 2.2.1 in both the CPO and eMSP role.
